Let us Not Forget

Let us not forget the Nigerian girls
Lest if we do they be doomed
to a life of captivity.
Let us not forget that where tyranny reigns
There is heartache and pain
with life restrained
and little room for growth.
Let us not ignore the voices
of mothers weeping for their children.
Let us stand together
and fight for the freedom
of our daughters and our sisters.

Indian Girls Raped and Murdered

This story is so heart wrenching and barbaric it makes you sick to the stomach. On Wednesday May 28, the bodies of two girls age fourteen and fifteen were found hanging from a tree hour after they went missing. The girls had gone into the field to relieve themselves because they had no toilet.

Reports say the father went to the local police station to report them missing but was ignored. Interestingly two police officers were among those arrested in connection with the deaths.

Autopsies carried out on the girls found evidence that they were raped and strangled before they were hung.

India is a place where no woman is safe. A rape occurs every 22 minutes and activists believe this number is low as many of the cases go unreported. Rape is tolerated and accepted as a part of the culture and the victims are often ostracized.

The women of India need outside intervention to pressure the government to do more to protect the women. They are helpless and defenseless because the very people employed to protect are themselves carrying out some of these atrocities.

Kidnapped Nigerian Girls

It is now almost  two months since about two hundred girls were kidnapped from their school in Nigeria. After weeks  of searching Nigeria’s army chief has disclosed that they now know the location of the girls  but cannot tell the parents where they are. He said they cannot go in with force.  Talking to reporters he said, “Just leave us alone, we are working, we will get the girls back.” Since the girls were kidnapped about two hundred and seventy civilians have been killed by Boko Haram members.

Women Murdered by Spouses

There were two murders making headlines yesterday. The first was in Brooklyn where a man stabbed and killed his wife. He injured his son who tried to intervene then attempted suicide. Dead is Gyltene Rugova a 46 year old mother of four.  It is reported that Mrs Rugova was preparing to open a pizza shop and was happy and looking forward to the grand opening. Now her dream will never be a reality. She is dead!

The other murder was that of April Jace.  She was shot to death by her husband actor Michael Jace in their home.  The couple have two young children who are now left without a mother and a father who may possibly spent the rest of his life behind bars for her death.

The question one might ask is could these deaths have been prevented.  Now this is the tricky part about domestic violence of this nature, you don’t know it is going to happen until it happens. Since no one knows what happens behind closed doors I implore and encourage women not to ignore signs of violence in their partners.  Tell someone about it if you are the subject of violence.  I am not saying this was the situation in either of these two cases, I am just saying…

May God grant the families of these two women the strength to deal with the loss of their loved ones who were savagely taken from them.

To all men I say anger can last a few minutes but the way you react can change your lives and the lives of those around you forever. Once you take a life it is final. There is no going back and make amends. There is nothing you can do to bring back that life.  If the situation is too much for you to handle walk away. You cannot breathe life into another human being so don’t take lives.

Missing Nigerian Girls

This video shows some of the Nigerian girls who were abducted almost a month ago. For the families of the missing girls this is some consolation, if these are indeed the missing girls. It means they are still alive. In the video Boko Haram claims that the girls have converted to Islam. He is demanding the release of a number of prisoners in exchange for their freedom.

Kidnapped Nigerian girls

Another day has passed, another night has come and for many families in Nigeria it offers them no comfort and they will find no rest as they wait for another morning to dawn still not knowing where their daughters are. It has been more than three weeks since over two hundred Nigerian girls were abducted from their school. It is not clear how much effort the Government has made to find the missing girls and they are turning to the world for support to find their children. Do not let these mothers pleas fall on deaf ears. Do not ignore their tears. It is time for the world to take a stand on atrocities carried out against women. There is too much talk and too little action and not many are held accountable. Tonight let us all say a word of prayer for the safe return of the girls.

‘If You Can’t Prevent Rape, you enjoy it.’

The chief of India’s Central Bureau of Investigation Ranjit Sinha a few days ago made a statement in which he sought to make a comparison between rape and gambling.  He is quoted as saying “If you can’t prevent rape, you enjoy it.  He was attempting to make the point that if betting could not be made illegal then the government should make revenue by legalizing it.

Perhaps I am wrong but as far as my mind allows me to I see no similarities between gambling and rape.  Gambling is something you do of your own free will; rape is a violent criminal act  carried out against the will of the victim. It is  unfortunate that the head of a department which investigates rape cases should make such a statement.  Rape is not a joke it is a serious crime and must not be trivialized.

How can women have confidence of ever getting justice  in a system  which allows the head of the Bureau of investigation to make such a statement and still have his job!

Say NO to Domestic Abuse

The month of October is designated Domestic Violence Awareness month.  Domestic Violence is a global issue and as the month come to a close it is very important that everyone continue to be mindful and continue to spread awareness so that one day this vicious cycle of abuse will end.

Each year thousands of women across the world die as a result of domestic violence and other forms of physical abuse.  There are thousands who continue to suffer on a daily basis.  The fight against domestic violence like the fight against drug addiction often seem like a losing battle but we must do everything in our powers to end this malady.

Domestic violence is the leading cause of death among women.  In many countries there are laws to protect women against abuse but sometimes these laws are not enforced.  In counties which enforce the laws the fight against domestic violence is still very complex as it is often very difficult to identify someone who is going to snap and kill his partner.  Often it is only the person suffering the abuse and those in the household where it is taking place who knows about it.

The violent nature of their partners leave some women trapped in their relationships immobilized by the fear of what will happen should they attempt to leave.  These fears are justified as statistics shows that seventy-five percent of women killed by their partners lost their lives after ending their relationships.

The journey to end domestic violence against women must begin with women being aware of thing to look out for in an abuser and take measures to avoid these situations.  Abuse of any form is not a normal part of a relationship and is therefore not acceptable.

Stop Abuse of Women

You are Not His Property

We are living in the twenty-first century but what progress as people can we say we have made when men are keeping women enslaved. This is not about race, color or class. Women from every area of society have at one point or another found themselves subjected to abuse from men. Age is of little relevance, as long as you are a woman you are at risk.

In spite of human rights laws and legislation little girls mere children themselves are married off to grown men, sentenced to a life of hard labor and abuse with no hope of an education. In some instances once married the woman becomes the property of the man. She has no voice, she has no say. He is her lord and master and his every command she must obey. As his property he happiness is not important. Her job is to make him happy and take care of his every need.

It is time for women to stop accepting less than they deserve. In some abusive relationship when ask why they stay a woman may respond “I love him.” You may love the man but while you are busy loving him who is loving you? In reality a woman does not need a man anymore than he needs her. You may feel hurt, disappointed, betrayed and lonely but at the end of the day you are alive and life goes on.

Sometimes, somewhere out there something good is waiting for you but if you remain trapped in an unhappy relationship you will never experience it. Don’t be like a welcome mat and allow him to walk all over you. The change will come only when women begin to stand up for themselves and say enough is enough.

Say NO to Child Marriages

Eight Year Old Bride Dies In Yemen

There is no end to the abuse of girls and women across the world.  It happens on a daily basis.  What is even more heart rending and heart-breaking is Child marriages.  Just a few days ago an eight girl from Yemen became another victim of Child Marriage.

The eight year old girl identified as Rawan died from internal bleeding after intercourse that ruptured her uterus on her wedding night.  Her husband was five times her age.

Yemen authorities say they are investigating the girl’s death and will prosecute those responsible.  No action as yet being taken against the man responsible for the child’s death.

The incident has caused international outrage, but will it be enough to bring about laws to protect children from Child Marriages?  Governments in countries where Child Marriage is practiced over the years have only made halfhearted attempts to enforce laws to stop the practice.  While they take a lackadaisical approach, the children continue to suffer.

Parents who subject their children to this kind of sexual slavery must be held accountable.  It must not continue to go on.  These girls are robbed of their childhood; forced to take on adult responsibilities of cooking , cleaning, bedding grown men and enduring agonizing sex.  A child’s body is not ready for intercourse.  Like Rawan some will die from internal injuries, others will die giving birth.

None of us can say we know what Rawan must have endured.  We can only imagine the agonizing pain she must have suffered.  We can only imagine how much she must have cried out in agony while this monster, this sorry excuse of a man ripped her body apart.  He took from her, her childhood , her innocence, her every hope dream and aspirations and her life.  What kind of a monster does this to a child?

Sleep well Rawan my dear sleep well. Free from sorrow, free from pain you are glory bound. Safe in the arms of the Savior who said ”Suffer little children to come on to me and forbid then not for such is the Kingdom of Heaven.”  Sleep well  Rawan in the arms of the Savior.  The angels in Heaven are weeping for all the children we are killing.
