How terrible it is that we have this wonderful world given to us and the freedom to choose between good and bad and so often we choose the latter. A part of the Pope’s message that still rings in my head is when he said the real danger in the world comes from man. We are blessed with the ability to choose to live in peace and harmony with one another yet we choose war. We build weapons of mass destruction and we slaughter each other. We abuse, condemn and reject one another and we choose hate over love. It is time for us to turn away from evil, turn away from hate, stop slaughtering each other and know that we are one people, all a part of the human race. We must reject hate and war and treat each other with acceptance and love.

POEM

A Creed

Let me be a little kinder,
Let me be a little blinder
To the faults of those around me,
Let me praise a little more;
Let me be, when I am weary
Just a little bit more cheery,
Let me serve a little better
Those that I am striving for.

Let me be a little braver
When temptation bids me waver,
Let me strive a little harder
To be all that I should be;
Let me be a little meeker
With the brother that is weaker,
Let me think more of my neighbor
And a little less of me.

Let me be a little sweeter,
Make my life a bit completer
By doing what I should do
Every minute of the day;
Let me toil, without complaining,
Not a humble task disdaining,
Let me face the summons calmly
When death beckons me away.

Pope Francis Visits New York

Thousands of New Yorkers lined the streets to get a glimpse of Pope Francis and there were excited cheers from people everywhere he went. The message he brought us was one of love, unity, equality and acceptance.

He delivered a powerful speech to the United Nations General Assembly. He spoke about the abuse of power and about those more powerful countries that lend money to poorer countries with stringent measures that keep those countries in poverty. He spoke about those cast off by society who live on what is discarded by others and suffer the most from abuse of the environment.

He noted that the environment was not ours to abuse much less to destroy and touched on the topic of man creating weapons of mass destruction. “In wars and conflict there are individuals who weep, suffer and die,” he said. He did not stop there but also spoke about human trafficking, the sale of body parts and the sexual exploitation of little girls and boys. Every subject he touched had something to do with us as individuals and our environment. The thing I hope everyone who listened to that speech took note of is these words that ring so true -The real danger in the world comes from man – what are we going to do about it? Continue down the path of destruction, inflicting pain on one another or are we going to change?

An Inspirational Story

Masks

Don’t be fooled by the face I wear, for I wear a thousand masks, And none of them are me. Don’t be fooled, for goodness sake, don’t be fooled.

I give you the impression that I’m secure, that confidence is my name and coolness is my game, And that I need no one. But don’t believe me. Beneath dwells the real me in confusion, in aloneness, in fear. That’s why I create a mask to hide behind, to shield me from the glance that knows.

But such a glance is precisely my salvation. That is, if it’s followed by acceptance, if it’s followed by love. It’s the only thing that can liberate me from my own self-built prison walls. I’m afraid that deep down I’m nothing and that I’m just no good, And that you will reject me.

And so begins the parade of masks. I idly chatter to you. I tell you everything that’s really nothing and nothing of what’s everything, of what’s crying within me. Please listen carefully and try to hear what I’m not saying. I’d really like to be genuine and spontaneous, and me. But you’ve got to help me. You’ve got to hold out your hand.

Each time you’re kind and gentle, and encouraging, Each time you try to understand because you really care, my heart begins to grow wings, feeble wings, but wings. With your sensitivity and sympathy, and your power of understanding, you alone can release me from my shallow world of uncertainty.

It will not be easy for you. The nearer you approach me, the blinder I may strike back. But I’m told that Love is stronger than strong walls, And in this lies my only hope. Please try to beat down these walls with firm hands, but gentle hands, for a child is very sensitive.

Who am I, you wonder…

I am every man you meet. I am every woman that you meet.

And I am also you.

Boycott Turing Pharmaceuticals

Say No to the hike in Price of Daraprim Tablets

For years drug companies have gotten away with overpricing life saving drugs and making the lives of users more stressful financially than it ought to be. It is now time for us to come together and take a stand against unscrupulous drugs companies like TURING PHARMACEUTICALS.

The recent hike in the price of the Drug DARAPRIM should serve as a wakeup call for all of us. This drug has been on the market since 1953. It is currently used by AIDS and Cancer patients. For 62 years this drug was affordable however now that has changed. In August Turing Pharmaceuticals acquired exclusive rights to the drug and the price has increased from $13.50 to $750.00 per tablet. Reason for this increase… GREED. This increase by Turing Pharmaceuticals is obnoxious and disgusting and it makes my stomach turn to know that they should want to profit this much from the plight of the most medically vulnerable among us.

We have to take a stand we cannot remain passive. We must lobby for measures to be put in place to protect patients from continued exploitation. If Turing Pharmaceuticals is allowed to get away with this price hike more companies will do the same. They have no moral conscience, no empathy for the patients battling complex diseases. Greed has clouded their judgment and stripped them of all humanity and moral obligation to act like decent human beings. Let us take a stand against Turing Pharmaceuticals. Boycott the sale of DARAPRIM. Let us stand in solidarity with AIDS and Cancer patients.

Refugee Crisis

As we go about enjoying this beautiful and peaceful Sunday let us keep those fleeing for their lives in our thoughts. Today I learned that another boat with immigrant sunk off the Greek Island of Lesbos. Fourteen people are feared dead including a five year-old child. Let’s say a word of prayer for them. So much turmoil in the world…if only we as humans had the capacity to love one another, what a difference it would make.
