Financial Security

Women are very trusting and are often taken advantage of. Many take it for granted that their partners will stand by them and take care of their finances so they have nothing to worry about. This is a false sense of security.

Every woman must ensure her financial security. Do not leave it up to the man, you need your financial independence. It is okay to have a joint account but you also need a separate account for yourself. It is not that your don’t trust him but it is good to have something of your own that you can fall back on just in case.

Always ensure that any property that you acquire together have both your names on it and not just his. Trust is a good thing but when things go wrong that is the time when you realize that trust is not enough. Always get something in writing to back up your claims or you might not have a leg to stand on.

  1. Good advice, Marva. Also, make sure both your names appear either one above the other or side by side with no “and” and no “or.” Completely equal ownership so one does not supercede the other. I’ve counseled way too many women in divorces they did not expect who, because the husband’s name appeared first, followed by AND/OR, then her name, he was considered the primary, and her signature without his was meaningless.
