The soursop otherwise know as Graviola, tree is said to have cancer fighting properties up to ten thousand times stronger in slowing the growth of cancer cells than Adriamycin a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug. Unlike chemotherapy it kills only the cancer cells and does not harm healthy cells. It is said to be effective in twelve types of cancer, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreatic cancer.
The National Cancer Institute performed the first scientific research in 1976; the result showed the soursop leaves and stems were effective in attacking and destroying cancer cells. Since then the soursop leaves has proven to be a potent cancer in twenty independent laboratory tests. With all these amazing qualities one no doubt will wonder why the soursop (graviola) is not being used more in the treatment of cancer. The problem is that the soursop is completely natural and under federal law not patent-able. There is no way to make serious profits from it and that is where the roadblock comes up. One drug company invested almost seven years trying to synthesize two of the soursop’s most potent ingredients. If they could isolate and produce man-made clones of what makes the soursop so potent they would be able to patent it and make their money back. However they were unable to replicate the original.

Hello, Marva; thank you for this post…
I have been hearing a lot about soursop lately and I remember it fondly – one of my favorite tropical fruits. Maybe people need to just quietly use this natural medicine to get healthy; I am wondering whether medical doctors and other health professionals in the Caribbean and Latin America are certainly as tied to the same insane medical protocols as they are in the US. I know I wouldn’t let them treat me with chemo and radiation but would seek out more natural treatment modalities.
We can only hope that more research is done and people are made aware of their options.
I’ve never heard of that. Is it grown in the U.S.?
I don’t believe it is grown in the U.S. but it can be found in the Caribbean.
In Costa Rica this fruit is called guanabana. It was a favorite of mine though some people don’t like its sweet and sour taste. It makes an excellent juice blended with ice. I never realized the benefits of the leaves. It is one of the more costly fruits there, due to each tree only producing a few fruits each seqson and the lengthy time it takes for them to come to full maturity.
I don’t like the taste of the fruit either but I know a lot of people who love it.
I really like the taste but the texture is pretty off putting. I usually blend it with ice or mix with another juice, like carambola or orange juice.
Some people blend it then strain it to remove some of the fiber that way you get a smoother taste. I guess it all depends on how you like it.
True.
