Breast Cancer Screening

The new guidelines by the American Cancer Society for the screening of breast cancer have received mixed reviews. Some women believe that early screening saved their lives. In fact it is known that women are getting breast cancer before age thirty. I know of one individual who was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer at the age of 28. She died before her thirtieth birthday leaving two young children. Maybe early detection could have saved her…

However I am also aware that many women have received false cancer diagnosis and some have gone through unnecessary treatment. Cancer is a scary thing and just the thought that they may have cancer is enough for some women to want to do something about it. We have to maintain a balance so we are not doing more harm to women rather than saving them. I believe however that women who have higher risk of getting cancer should continue to get early screening and not wait until age 45.
